St Martin's is a church in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. Our worship is catholic in style, with structured liturgy and periods of silence for personal reflection, and preaching. We value the beauty and tradition of Anglican worship, but combine this with a modern approach. Our main service is the Parish Mass on Sunday morning. Most of our services are taken from Common Worship, but the Book of Common Prayer is used at some of our evening services. Vestments and incense are used at the Parish Mass every Sunday. We are a very welcoming congregation so you too will find a welcome here.
The Church
St Martin's Church is a grade II listed building. It was designed by John Dando Sedding (1838-1891), a noted Victorian church architect with an interest in a 'crafted Gothic' style 1 . Other churces designed by Sedding include the Holy Trinity, Sloane Square, London, the Church of our Most Holy Redeemer, Clerkenwell, London and numerous rural churches in South West England. St Martin's Church was built in 1869-70 for Maria Ann Hudson of Brabyns Hall (1819-1906). The Lady Chapel was added in 1895-6 and the aisle in 1909, both designed by Henry Wilson (1864-1934). Its decor and ambience is heavily influenced by the Victorian era in which it was built, the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood of artists who were involved in its original design and construction, and the Arts and Crafts movement which was flourishing at the time of its extensions. Because of this it is rightly known as Marple's "Hidden Gem".
